I was looking for a text expander program for linux environment, and found AutoKey, which actually does more than what i was looking for. Its a linux desktop automation utility which allows you to manage collection of scripts, and assign abbreviations and hotkeys to these scripts allowing you to execute them on demand in whatever program you are using. How to install phpMyAdmin on Ubuntu?

You can install and configure phpMyAdmin easily. Start with the following command to install phpMyAdmin –
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

After installation is completed, just open apache2.conf file –
sudo gedit /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

and add the following line to the file –
Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf

Now save the file and restart apache –
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

How to start/stop mysql server on Ubuntu?

Its really simple, just open the terminal and give the command below to start mysql server –
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start

To restart mysql server, use the command –
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart

You can stop mysql server by simply the command –
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop

If your mysql server isn’t running and you attempt to connect to the mysql server, you may get a warning like this –

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: [2002] No such file or directory (trying to connect via unix:///var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock) in /home/atik/www/***.php on line ***

In that case, just start the mysql server.

How to install git on Ubuntu?

To install git on ubuntu is very simple. Just follow the steps below-

1. First download the latest stable source from
2. Now extract the package and then open your terminal and change to the directory where you have extracted the package.
cd /home/atik/Downloads/git-
3. Run the following commands –
sudo make install

Thats all you need to do. You can test the installation by the command –
which git
This should output something like this
which indicates git is successfully installed.

gnome-open command will open anything specified in its path using default gnome application. Lets see few examples belows –

To open home directory use the command –
gnome-open .

To open any directory just give its path after the gnome-open command –
gnome-open /home/atik/ebook/

Any pdf file inside home directory can be opened wih the command –
gnome-open ./article.pdf

This will open the specified url in your default browser –

Most of the cases, download option is disabled in scribd documents. But you can still download the document in pdf format. For this purpose, you need to add a virtual printer. You can easily add a virtual printer to utilize the print option and generate pdf documents. Just follow the steps below –

1. Open your terminal and type the command –
sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

2. Now add a printer – System->Administrator->Printing->New. From devices select “Generic CUPS-PDF Printer” and click forward. On the next screen click apply.

3. Try to print a test page and you may get an error message like “scheduler could not execute the backend”. To fix this issue, open your terminal and type the commands –
sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf
sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend
